The advantages of strapping as a packaging solution

15.08.2023

Strapping technology offers remarkable versatility: from bundling stacks of corrugated cardboard to keeping cartons and boxes tightly closed or securing goods on pallets.

Here are seven reasons why strapping technology scores points across the entire logistics spectrum.

1. Stability:

Not every cardboard box fits the product perfectly. When boxes are overfilled, they bulge out and are difficult to secure. Strapping technology solves this problem by using minimal material to provide a secure hold and prevent the box from deforming or bursting. Multiple strapping can increase the stability of a package by up to 50% and is an option for heavy loads or when goods are unevenly packed in a box.

2. Flexibility:

Packages of all sizes and weights are suitable for strapping – from loose stacks of newspapers to boxes of clothing or bulky home appliances. Variable strap sizes and thicknesses ensure a tensile strength up to 600 kilos, depending on the product to be secured. On many machine types, strap tension can be adjusted to enable super-soft strapping for fragile products. Frequently changing product sizes and parameters are no problem for most strapping machines.

3. Speed:

Minor improvements can offer major advantages in series production operations. For example, workers can strap a package much faster than they can glue it. This increases overall output – especially with large boxes. The SoniXs MP-6 T and other automated systems from Mosca strap up to 58 packages per minute. Setup times are minimal: one coil holds up to 8,000 metres of strap, which means machine operation rarely needs to be interrupted for a strap change. On models equipped with a double strap dispenser, downtime is eliminated almost completely because the machine switches to the second strap coil automatically. Ultrasonic sealing with SoniXs technology also saves time because, unlike a conventional heat welding system, it does not require a warm-up phase.

4. Durability:

Strapping can be applied quickly – and the material is extremely durable. The straps can easily withstand long storage periods and challenging conditions, such as frozen products in cold storage or palletised building materials outdoors. The material does not become brittle or lose its tensile strength.

5. Efficiency:

Professional transport security is of central importance for logistics companies. Material and process costs are often a key budget factor. Compared to other transport securing techniques, strapping offers an ideal solution thanks to its optimum cost-benefit ratio. For example, the stabilising qualities of strapping make it possible to use thinner and less expensive cardboard boxes. Lidded boxes enable fast packaging compared to flap boxes and are ideally suited for strapping with an excellent price-performance ratio. A practical additional benefit of strapping is that the straps can be used as a carrying aid during loading and unloading.

6. Eco-friendly:

Reducing the amount of packaging material not only saves money, it also contributes to environmental protection. In times of high social sensitivity for sustainability issues, this is a strong argument in customer communications.

7. Tamper-proof:

Especially for manufacturers of pharmaceuticals, mobile phones or other delicate products, strapping provides a security seal that cannot be opened and resealed during transport without damage. This helps manufacturers prevent theft while also protecting consumers from product tampering.
