All-round sustainability -
around the clock

Since 2008, we have been producing our high-quality strapping in one of the most modern plants in Europe, in Muckental in the Odenwald, not far from the company headquarters. Sustainability has been a central point in the planning, construction and operation of the plant from the very beginning.

Several extrusion lines produce polypropylenePP and polyesterPET strapping in fully automatic operation around the clock. The plastic straps, which are between 5 and 15.5 mm wide, can be used in all strapping machines, regardless of machine type or manufacturer. The plant meets the increasing customer demand for sustainability in a variety of ways.

From recycled material to high-quality new product

At our production facility in the Odenwald, Strap PET is made from almost 100% recycled material: The raw material used is "bottle flakes", which come from waste streams from the deposit bottle system and can no longer be recycled into bottles. After processing, the recycled product becomes a high-quality raw material: the PET, which are predominantly green in color, can withstand loads of between 185 and 580 kg, depending on their width. The waste or scrap material generated during production is also fed back into the system via a shredder system.

According to the recycling service provider Interzero , the use of recycled material saves around 85% CO2 emissions compared to the primary process - that is around 2.5 tons of CO2 per ton of material produced compared to the use of new granulate. Extrapolated to Mosca, the saving corresponds to the same amount of CO2 that 500 hectares of forest in Germany filter out of the air every year.

Outdoors and indoors: using available energy

When building the production facility, Mosca used the potential of the huge flat roof to install a photovoltaic system with a collector area of 2,500 square meters, which feeds electricity into the grid.

From October to March, the weather also ensures that no additional energy is required to cool the production process. This is because the outside temperature is suitable for feeding the necessary cooling units via a multiple cooling system consisting of free coolers and compressors.

Energy does not go to waste inside the hall either. Insulated hot parts ensure energy-efficient systems whose remaining waste heat is used to heat the halls on cold days. The energy from braking power is in turn made available to the system as electricity, as parts of the production plant have units with an electronic converter.

Customer-friendly sustainability

Mosca is constantly working on offering customer-oriented solutions. One important product is the 5 mm wide PP. Thanks to the latest winding technology, a running length of up to 8,000 m on a roll is offered instead of the usual running length of 6,500 m. This not only saves space in logistics, but also allows the customer longer running times, shorter downtimes and lower set-up costs.

Optimized packaging techniques and palletizing schemes also ensure that customers generate less packaging waste: for example, straps are often no longer packed in cardboard boxes but stacked directly onto the pallet. This is completely wrapped in stretch film.

We also see the handling of the strapping after use by our customers as part of our responsibility. To support our customers in this, we launched a pilot project with Interzero in fall 2023 to return and reintegrate the strapping waste into our production.

We are also a member of the Beteiligungs- und Kunststoffverwertungsgesellschaft (KBV), which is responsible for the further development of environmentally friendly and economical plastics recycling. In concrete terms, this means that customers can contact the company to have their tape waste recycled.
