Mosca presents smart powerhouse for securing goods at Ligna 2019

Maximum strapping force for the global wood industry: Ligna 2019 is where Mosca is presenting a new variant of the KOV-111-16, including a high-performance sealing unit. The strapping unit has a tensile force of up to 7,000 newtons and allows the use of 19-millimeter strapping material for securing heavy products. The machine is also equipped with a scantling device and a fully automated edge protection setter. This makes it an ideal choice for businesses that need to quickly and efficiently secure large volumes of timber products for transport with minimal downtime. The Mosca display in Hall 16 (Stand B12) will also feature the MK-50, a particularly solid machine for strapping non-palleted products. The RO-M-RI and the RO-MP-6 T, which are especially suited to bundling long, narrow products such as roof battens or profiled timber, round out the Mosca portfolio for the timber industry.

When large quantities of sawn wood, chipboard, or other timber products are prepared for transport, the strapping technology must work smoothly and efficiently. Downtimes, especially for refilling consumables such as strapping, scantlings, and edge protection for securing the product must be as short as possible. This is the only way the process of securing goods for transport can keep pace with upstream production systems. "We have created a new variant of the KOV-111-16 with a scantling device and edge protection setter to master this challenge with a large magazine," says Mosca GmbH CEO Timo Mosca. "Combined with the high-performance sealing unit we have developed, this gives us a solution that is specially tailored to the wood industry." Integrated into conveying systems made by Mosca or other manufacturers, the fully automated machine feeds scantlings under the product to be strapped and protects the upper edges with solid cardboard.

More functionality with scantling device and edge protection setter
Its magazine can hold 75 scantlings with up to five different lengths at the same time. During operation, the magazine moves diagonally to feed the right-sized scantling. When the carriage is not moving, the magazine can also be reloaded manually, avoiding costly downtimes.

The fully automated edge protection feeder with its large magazine that holds up to 130 edge protection pieces also minimizes downtimes. The magazine, like the sealing unit, is located in the KOV-111-16's top platen. As soon as the conveying system moves the products to the machine, the top platen moves downward for strapping. It automatically detects the edges of the product and sets the edge protection precisely. This allows more flexibility for various product heights and widths. Customers who want to further reduce downtimes can invest in the optional new-generation strap sealing unit, the BSG-4. It seals the strap end of the depleted coil with the strap end of the new coil, reducing coil-replacement time to a minimum. The newest version is equipped with a battery, allowing a single device to switch back and forth among several machines.

High-performance sealing unit secures heavy products
The core of the KOV-111-16 is Mosca's own high-performance sealing unit, which achieves strap tension of up to 7,000 newtons. It allows use of 19-millimeter strapping material with thicknesses of up to 1.3 millimeters. This secures the products with a tensile strength of up to 10,000 newtons – ideal for strapping heavy products.

Compact strapping with the MK-50
The high-performance sealing unit is also used in the MK-50, which will be displayed at Ligna. The KOV-111-16's "little brother" is designed for use on fully automated lines. The machine's high-performance sealing unit enables it to strap non-palleted products, including heavy semi-finished goods. If it is used for lighter products, a SoniXs sealing unit can be installed as a cost-efficient alternative. The built-in strapping control switch offers double strapping security. It ensures that strapping was actually successful – an important check in fully automated processes. The MK-50 was originally developed for the ceramics industry, and its encapsulated bearings and electromechanical components protect it from wear and malfunction.

Solutions for long or narrow products
Both the RO-M-RI and the RO-MP-6 T reliably strap long, narrow products such as roof battens and profiled timber up to eight meters long. Both machines are used in the wood industry primarily as part of a production line. The RO-MP-6 T, which is used in other industries for manual strapping, is equipped with a dedicated interface. Which machine is best-suited to a given application depends on the direction of conveyance. For instance, the RO-M-RI with its special retractable ring-shaped strap feed arch can strap cross-fed products that are at least 65 millimeters wide. For this purpose, the frame is retracted into the table. Once the product is positioned, the frame closes again, strapping the product. To strap long timber pieces at multiple points at the same time, multiple RO-M-RI machines can be connected in series.

The RO-MP-6 T is a cost-effective alternative for strapping products of one meter in length or more that are fed in lengthwise. It aligns them precisely on four sides using a package stop, a pusher, and a hold-down device. Its sealing unit uses an especially narrow slide that can strap narrow products (65 millimeters or more in width) at high strap tension. The packages are then transported out via an external conveying system.
